Begin through dense montane rainforest. The well-maintained trail winds beneath towering trees draped in moss. Mandara Hut offers dormitory-style accommodation with solar-powered lighting and flush toilets.

The summit push begins at midnight. The trail is steep and relentless — switchbacks up loose scree to Gilman's Point, then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Descend all the way to Marangu Gate in one long day.
