Waterfalls, forest and foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro

Six ways to meet
the mountain.

Moshi is far more than a base camp for climbers. Waterfalls, hot springs, ancient forest, coffee farms — and real high-altitude trails on Kilimanjaro itself. Six journeys, one day each, all led by guides who grew up on these slopes.

Materuni Waterfall & Coffee Heritage

A 90-metre waterfall, a mountain village, and coffee made the way it has been for generations.

High on the southern slopes, Materuni is one of Kilimanjaro's most beautiful villages. The walk in passes banana groves, avocado trees and arabica coffee plots, with mountain streams beside the trail. At the end: a waterfall dropping nearly 90 metres into a misty pool — and afterwards, the village's famous coffee, taken from bean to cup with song and dance.

Locals call it Maji Moto — "hot water". Fed by springs rising from deep underground, Chemka's crystal-clear pools stay warm all year beneath a canopy of enormous fig trees. Rope swings, light moving under the surface, birdsong overhead — the easiest, most restorative day out from Moshi.
